Fuel Cost Breakdown
| Fuel use | Gallons | Cost (USD) |
|---|---|---|

Estimates only. Real fuel economy and prices vary with road conditions, driving speed, weather, load and location. Generator calculations assume the same fuel price as the RV.
How to Use the RV Fuel Cost Calculator
Planning an RV road trip across the United States? This free RV fuel cost calculator helps you estimate gas or diesel expenses before you leave. It works for motorhomes, camper vans, travel setups with tow vehicles, and other RVs when you enter the correct combined vehicle fuel economy.
- Enter the one-way driving distance in miles.
- Enter your RV's average miles per gallon (MPG). For a truck towing a trailer, use the truck's actual towing MPG.
- Add the expected fuel price per US gallon.
- Choose whether your journey includes a return trip, and add a percentage for detours or sightseeing if needed.
- Optionally enter generator gallons per hour and the total hours you expect to run it.
- Click Calculate Fuel Cost to view gallons, costs, and a breakdown.
RV Fuel Cost Formula
The basic formula is Driving fuel cost = Total driving miles ÷ MPG × Price per gallon. The calculator first doubles the entered one-way mileage if round trip is selected, then applies the optional extra-driving percentage. Generator fuel is calculated separately and added to the total.
| Calculation | Formula |
|---|---|
| Driving miles | One-way miles × (2 if round trip, otherwise 1) × (1 + extra driving % / 100) |
| Driving fuel (gal) | Driving miles ÷ RV MPG |
| Generator fuel (gal) | Generator gal/hour × total generator hours |
| Total fuel cost | (Driving gallons + generator gallons) × price per gallon |
| Cost per driving mile | Total fuel cost ÷ total driving miles |
RV Road Trip Fuel Cost Example
Suppose your destination is 500 miles away, your motorhome averages 10 MPG, and fuel costs $3.50 per gallon. A round trip is 1,000 miles. With a 10% allowance for extra driving, the estimated total becomes 1,100 miles. You would need about 110 gallons for driving, costing $385 before any generator use. Your actual trip cost may differ.
What Affects RV Gas Mileage?
RV fuel economy depends on the vehicle type, engine, total weight, terrain, wind, tire condition, traffic and driving habits. Large Class A motorhomes, Class C motorhomes, camper vans and pickup trucks towing travel trailers can have very different MPG figures. Use your own recorded fuel economy whenever possible rather than relying on a general average.
How to Reduce RV Fuel Costs
- Plan your route in advance to reduce unnecessary mileage.
- Drive smoothly and avoid unnecessary hard acceleration.
- Check tire pressure and follow your vehicle manufacturer's recommendations.
- Carry only what you need and stay within vehicle weight ratings.
- Compare fuel prices along your route rather than assuming one price everywhere.
- Track actual MPG after each fuel stop to improve future estimates.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate RV fuel cost for a trip?
Divide your total planned driving miles by your RV's MPG, then multiply the gallons by the estimated fuel price per gallon. Add generator fuel costs if applicable.
How much gas does an RV use per 100 miles?
Divide 100 by your RV's MPG. For example, at 10 MPG, an RV uses about 10 US gallons per 100 miles.
Can I calculate diesel motorhome fuel costs?
Yes. Enter your diesel motorhome's average MPG and the expected diesel price per gallon. The same distance and fuel cost formulas apply.
Does the calculator work for travel trailers?
Yes. Enter the fuel efficiency of your tow vehicle while it is towing the trailer, not its normal unloaded MPG.
How does the round-trip option work?
It doubles the entered one-way distance. The optional extra-driving percentage is then applied to the resulting distance.
Does this tool include generator fuel?
Yes. Enter the generator's fuel consumption in gallons per hour and its total run time during the trip. Enter zero if it does not apply.
What is a good MPG for an RV?
There is no single MPG value that fits every RV. Mileage depends heavily on the RV class, engine, weight, terrain and whether a vehicle is towing. Use actual trip records for the most useful estimate.
Does the estimate include campground fees and tolls?
No. This calculator covers driving fuel and optional generator fuel only. Campground fees, tolls, maintenance, food and other travel costs are not included.
Why might my actual fuel cost be higher?
Higher fuel prices, headwinds, steep grades, traffic, additional detours and lower-than-expected MPG can increase your actual fuel expenses.
Is the RV fuel cost calculator free?
Yes. You can use this calculator for free to estimate road-trip fuel requirements and costs.
